Easter Plays

Easter is coming up and you or a family member might be involved in an Easter drama or Passion Play. These generally re-enact the story of Jesus’ life, crucifixion and resurrection.

We’ve got Easter costumes and props for adults and children, as well as wigs and beards, too. We’ve even found a site with free plays you can download. We chose one and looked at the cast list to get an idea of what you might need for your own performances. Aside from the obvious star of the show, Jesus, there’s also his mother Mary, and Mary Magdalene, the twelve disciples, Romans, Moses, angels and devils, and various soldiers, servants and townspeople.

Roman guard costumes () require a bit more accessorizing. We’ve got helmets and armor, shields, swords, armbands, and roman sandals.

According to Wikipedia, there are some impressively large productions of the Passion Play that happen across the U.S. and around the world.

  • The Mesa Arizona Easter Pageant Jesus the Christ began in 1928 as a small sunrise Easter presentation. The pageant is now the "largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world."[

  • In Eureka Springs, Arkansas, The Great Passion Play is regularly performed. Since its first performance in 1968, The Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs has been seen by over 7.5 million people making it the largest attended outdoor drama in America.

  • In Brazil, The Passion of the Christ is performed every year during Easter in a purpose-built 100,000-square-metre (1,100,000 sq ft) theatre-city considered to be the largest open-air theatre in the world. Over 500 actors appear on the nine separate stages within the stone walls of the New Jerusalem city-theatre.
