For most, cosplay is a hobby, others raise it to the level of performance art. But Yaya Han has made a career of it. As a professional costume designer, model and cosplay entertainer she has become “a solid, integrated presence in the fandom community.” And she’ll be appearing at SacAnime this weekend, January 7 – 9.
Her first taste of cosplay came while attending a con as an artist--showcasing and selling her work. “From seeing photos of the convention beforehand I knew people dressed up in costumes, so, with the help of a friend, sewed a really simple costume. That was the first time I used a sewing machine!”
From that beginning, she began interacting with other fans while portraying her favorite characters like Lady Deathstrike from the X-Men and Ada Wong from Resident Evil. “Costuming makes the most bold statement about what your fandom is, anyone can see what show you like from across the hall…and it brightens the whole convention.”
Here’s how Han made a career from a hobby: “I make all of my own costumes as well as design for TV production companies, clubs, and photographers. I also make regular guest appearances at conventions to teach panels and workshops on costuming, judge and/or host contests, and meet my own fans and sign photos. On top of all that, I am an exhibitor (vendor) at over 20 conventions per year, selling my hand crafted costume accessories and items to the general public.”
Her advice for beginners: Really try to find the joy in researching and making your costumes (or have Moon Costumes help you create a costume from your design!) . Have fun for yourself, don't judge other people and their costumes, and don't let them judge you either. Just go have a blast!
