This video gives you a good sense of the GothLoli vibe, even the music (Yoko Kanno - Omna magni) evokes a childlike beauty and mysterious darkness. The photos included are a combination of cosplayers and actual J-rockers.
Have you seen our growing selection of Gothic Lolita dresses? They’re all custom-made, so if you’d like specific additions or changes, or something just like them yet completely different, just let us know on our Custom Costume form.
Right now we have four that are all white, three that are all black and three that are black and white. And then:
A dusty pink jacket dress
A bright pastel pink evening dress
A lavender and pink summer dress
A deep dark red and black scallop dress
We’ve told you about the GothLoli (or “gosurori”) scene in an earlier post, but it does seem to be gaining popularity. According to Japanese LifeStyle Zine:
“Due to the popularity of this cute style with many fans of Japanese animation and comics, characters dressed in the ‘Gothloli’ style may be found in numerous anime and manga. Some of the most prominent are Paradise Kiss, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, Rozen Maiden, Tsukuyomi - Moon Phase, Othello, Chobits, xxxHOLiC, and Pitaten. Most of these titles appeal primarily to male fans rather than the gothlolis themselves. However, large numbers of gothloli girls are visible at manga events such as comiket. They often buy doujinshi based upon their favourite bands, dolls and movie characters; and some are interested in other kinds of cosplay apart from goth loli style.”
One blogger in Vancouver combined Steampunk and Gothic Lolita Victorianism in an unusual way (as did her friend).
Check out the photos to get a broader idea of GothLoli!

Festival director John Naylor, known in Steampunk circles as Major Tinker, said: "This is the only festival of its type in Europe and we've people travelling thousands of miles from all over the world to be here. Within the castle, Hendrick's gin presented its "cabinet of curiosities" with local artist Sunshine Grey exhibiting a sound installation called the Merryweather Mesmeric Mood Modulator.
In the U.S., Steampunk fans can look forward to SteamCon II in Seattle, November 19 – 21. Their website says this year’s steamposium will “highlight the Weird Weird West or American steampunk, if you will. Imagine the age of steam on the wild frontier. You are invited to explore with us the world of roughriders on mechanical horses, mad inventors, mystical Indian shamans, and mighty steam locomotives. Picture airships instead of stagecoaches, and the precision of robotic sharp shooters. Join us for Riverboat Gambler Night, tea parties, concerts and more. If western steampunk doesn’t appeal, there will still be lots of classic steampunk to partake of as well.”
They’ll have LARPs:
Rise of Aester
Castle Falkenstein, the LARP
The Free Islands
“No RPG or LARPing experience is required. Characters will be provided. Costumes are encouraged.”
We’ve got a steampunk kit to help you play along, or you can look at our Early American History Costumes to evoke the Wild, I mean WEIRD West, and then punk it up with something from our accessories section. If you have an idea and just need help getting it made, fill out our Custom Costumes form and we’ll make it for you!

It seems Dragon Con Cosplayers Will Cosplay Anything. At least that’s what Mike Fahey of Kotaku.com says, and we feel he offers enough proof to back up his statement. He put it this way:
No entertainment property was beyond the reach Dragon Con's cosplayers in Atlanta this weekend…. Every time we turned around there were G.I. Joe characters, Star Wars bounty hunters, comic book heroes, science fiction heroes and villains, and many video game icons, just hanging about waiting to be photographed. Hell, we even found Waldo. Technically we found two, but one was eating, and we didn't want to disturb him.
In terms of video game cosplay, we've got a Black Mage, a few Final Fantasy characters, some Team Fortress 2 players, a handful of Marios, some World of Warcraft fans, and even a Ness!
Another site that offers a window into the world of Dragon Con Cosplay is Geeks of Doom.com. They explain:
Last year, Geeks of Doom did a post featuring 25 costumed ladies of Dragon*Con that was quite popular with most people on the Internets, which caught us by *complete* surprise. I mean, who knew that sexy women dressed in geeky costumes at a giant fan convention would be such a huge hit right?
Anyways, we’re back again this year and plan to do multiple posts since this is Dragon*Con — an event with more costumed people per square yard than anywhere in the world that I know of, including Halloween. Basically, more costumes equals more posts.
Also, we took some flack for not doing a “Men of Dragon*Con” photo feature. This year we’ll have one as well as a …few others.
And they kept their word. First they offered up 20 Cosplay Babes of Dragon*Con 2010 (Part 1) , followed by Part 2. And then their promised Costumed Men of Dragon*Con 2010. They also cooked up an Avengers Cosplay Photo Gallery.

So the Avengers movie cast was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con, but we thought it was time to take a closer look. It will be directed by Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series fame).
As you probably know, The Avengers are a team of superheroes that originally included The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and then Captain America was added in the fourth episode of the Marvel comic book series. Their roster rotates in order to fight "the foes no single superhero can withstand."
You would have seen many of the cast members already if you’ve seen the Iron Man films. You already knew Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark, then in Iron Man 2 you met Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson and Don Cheadle as War Machine.
If you’ve been keeping up on the production of Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming film Thor, you would’ve already seen a bit of Chris Hemsworth in the role, but you may have also seen him as James T. Kirk’s heroic but doomed dad in the most recent Star Trek film.
So that leaves the introduction of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye and the surprise move of casting Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner instead of Edward Norton, who played him in the most recent Hulk film. (Or Eric Bana, who played the role in the 2003 film). The cool thing is that Lou Ferrigno, who played the big green guy in the 1978 TV series will be providing the voice for The Incredible Hulk in this film.
You can don your own superhero costume or see your kids dressed as superheroes too! Create your own character, and we can even custom make the costume for you!
